1. Choose university and a program

 There are 741 universities across 82 regions of Russia for you to choose from, each with a wide range of educational programs in various fields. To choose the right university, you'll need to decide which subject you're most interested in studying. Will it be engineering? Economics? Or do you enjoy the arts? The next step is to choose an educational program.nbsp;

In Russia, you can enter a bachelor's, master's, specialist’s, postgraduate, adjunct, residency, or assistant internship program. After receiving your diploma, you can continue to your doctorate, take a refresher course, or enter a professional retraining program. You'll also need to decide whether to study in-person, blended, or online.

Sort the programs according to your chosen criteria and begin searching for your ideal university. Choose up to six universities and order them by preference. Register on our website to apply for your favorite universities.

Before applying, applicants should also consider how they plan to finance their studies. They might use their own personal funds, apply for scholarships from foundations or private companies, or compete for state funding from the Russian government. Every year, 15,000 foreign applicants are offered state funding to study in Russia. To participate in the competitive selection process, you must contact one of the offices of Rossotrudnichestvo or the consular office of the Russian Federation in your country.

2. Prepare your documents and submit your application

You can apply for a university through your personal account on the website. Before beginning your application, you should decide on the degree you'd like to achieve, funding options, and the list of universities you're most interested in attending. You must submit the following documents:

·            A copy of your passport or other ID;

·            A copy of your academic certificate;

·            Your completed application form;

·            A photo.

The application must list up to 6 universities that you are interested in attending, ordered by preference. Please make sure that all documents are translated into Russian and certified by a notary or consul. After learning about the admission process to a particular university, check the list of required documents to see if any additional paperwork is required.

3. Take a screening test in your country

Depending on the country, the first stage of the application process for those seeking a full-tuition state-funded scholarship may include an interview with representatives of Rossotrudnichestvo or a consular office of the Russian Federation, in addition to screening tests. The procedure is as follows:

1.     Receive information regarding interviews and screening tests through your personal account.

2.     Register for an interview or screening test, if required.

3.     After registering for your interview or screening test, pass the required formalities within the given time frame.

4.     Upon completing the interview and screening tests, you will receive a number score and a candidate ranking for your country. This will allow you to evaluate your chances of advancing to the second stage of the selection process.

5.     You can see whether or not you have qualified for the second stage by checking your personal account.

4. The second stage of selection

During the second stage of selection, candidates applying for state funding and candidates using other sources of funding are reviewed by universities.

1.     Visit your personal account to receive information regarding any additional tests. Some universities conduct additional screening tests that can be completed either remotely or in person.

2.     Prepare for the additional tests and take them in the required format. If you're planning to participate in an additional in-person screening test, you may need to obtain a visa, as well as purchase travel tickets, and arrive in Russia on the established dates. Check with the university for details regarding your arrival.

3.     The results of the second selection stage will be posted in your personal account. If you have successfully passed the second stage, you will also receive information about the educational institution that has accepted your application, as well as additional travel details for your arrival in Russia. If you haven't received travel details in your personal account, you should contact the educational institution as soon as possible. Please be sure to verify your date of arrival with university representatives!

4.     If you requested a preparatory course in your application, your personal account will also display information regarding the educational institution where you will be attending the course.

5.     Before traveling to Russia, you should have all of the necessary paperwork ready. You must present several documents to the admissions office upon your arrival at the university. These documents include:

·         Your application for admission;

·         Your document of identity and citizenship, with a notarized translation;

·         An academic certificate indicating your qualification (degree) obtained, subjects studied, and grades received, along with a notarized translation;

·         A certificate verifying that you have tested negative for HIV and have no medical conditions that would preclude you from studying in Russia, in Russian or with a notarized translation;

·         A photo.

Check whether your documents need to be consularized in the country of issue. If so, you will have to get them stamped at a consulate of the Russian Federation to confirm their authenticity. If your country has joined the Hague Convention, you can also obtain an apostille.

Contact the international office of your university, an  office of Rossotrudnichestvo, or a consular office in your country of residence for further information.

5. Get your student visa and come on over

Foreigners need a passport and a student visa to enter the Russian territory. Russia has a visa-free agreement with certain countries. You can apply for a student visa at the Russian embassy or consulate in your country. To do this, you'll need to obtain an invitation from your host university, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia (for admission under the quota) or the university itself.

Applicants from certain countries are not required to apply for a student visa due to visa-free agreements. In addition, citizens from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine can enter the country without a foreign passport.

Upon arrival, every foreign student must obtain a voluntary health insurance policy (VHI). This can be done  at any insurance company in just 30 minutes. A policy will cost RUB 4,000-12,000 (EUR 45-135). Generally, a VHI policy includes outpatient care, house calls, transportation costs, and minimal dental care. You can be fined for residing in Russia without a health insurance policy.

Russian universities offer accommodation for all in-person students, so you won't have to worry about finding accommodation in a rush. A small accommodation fee of RUB 300-6,000 roubles (EUR 3.7-76) is charged. The rooms usually accommodate two to four people and are equipped with all of the necessities. Another option for students is rented housing. Students may choose to rent an entire apartment or a room. It's also quite common for students to stay with a host family. The price of rent varies by city and region. The larger and closer to Moscow, the more expensive it gets. You can find rental housing through a real estate agency, the websites CIAN or Avito, or through ads on social networks.
